Bitter apple:

This plant that mainly grows in the desert is a common native of Sinai. Its common name is bitter apple, gourd, vine of Sodom. Its botanical name is citrullus colocynthis. Its Arabic name is Hanthal, hanzal or handal.
The plant is a native of Egypt, North Africa and the Mediterranean. The plant was known since the times of the Assyrians and the ancient Egyptians.

Medicinal uses
It is a well known purgative from the time of the ancient Egyptians. It is a powerful cathartic. When the fruit is ripe its pulp dries to form a powder used as a bitter medicine and drastic purgative. This powder is so inflammable that the Arabs collect it to use as kindling.
The Arabs used it topically to treat snake and scorpion bites.
